Have What It Takes To Be A Spirit Guide? Meet 2 Of Our Brand Ambassadors

ROCHESTER BUSINESS JOURNAL

Black Button Brand Ambassadors help novice and experienced drinkers navigate the complex (and delicious) world of high-quality spirits. By traveling to farmers markets, regional festivals, and neighborhood stores, these folks act as our Spirit Guides helping to spread the gospel of Black Button on a part-time basis. We caught up with two of our Brand Ambassadors, Bonnie and John, to see what they’ve been up to. If you have a passion for bourbon, people, and the highest quality ingredients, feel free to hop on over to our hiring page if you’d like connect with a hiring manager.

ABOUT OUR AMBASSADORS

Tell us a little about yourself! What do you do as your “day job”? What kinds of things do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

Bonnie: At 45, after working in the healthcare field my entire life, I decided to make a career change. I have two children that grew up to be wonderful men and now I wanted to focus on doing something that I would enjoy and get paid doing it! I love to meet new people, travel and be challenged. I wanted to look for an opportunity that would let me do all that and still be flexible with my schedule.

John: I’m semi-retired- work part-time from home. I own an internet-based product brokerage and marketing business. I have many spare time interests; a few are traveling, music (both live and at home), trying (emphasis on “trying”) to learn the guitar, cooking, biking, kayaking, brewing beer, exploring classic cocktails and bourbon, hanging with family and friends, and meeting new people.

What made the Black Button Brand Ambassador gig initially sound appealing to you? Has that turned out to be what you expected?

Bonnie: I wanted to apply for this position because it’s exciting to be a part of a company that supports its community.  I have been a brand ambassador for five years now and I love it. Instead of working for an agency I wanted to try to work for the company directly. This job has turned out better than I expected. I feel like I’m part of the Black Button family, no matter what small role I’ve played in promoting this incredible product. It’s easy because your proud to do it. Starting a homegrown business from scratch is difficult and it’s an honor to be able to support it.

John: I wanted to get out and meet people of all ages and backgrounds, have a flexible schedule, and have fun while doing so. I also enjoy good bourbon! Having already worked in both large and small organizations, I preferred to work in a smaller, growing craft beverage environment with less structure and more opportunities. And yes, Black Button has exceeded my expectations!

What has been the most surprising thing to you about being a Brand Ambassador?

Bonnie: The most surprising thing I found in being a brand ambassador is how rewarding the job can be when you believe in what your promoting.

John: The people at all of the events never fail to amaze and amuse me!

What is your favorite Black Button spirit? How do you typically drink it?

Bonnie: Hard to pick! But if I had to pick a drink: Bourbon Cream and Root-beer. And my favorite food pairing: Apple pie moonshine and chicken spiedies!

John: I really do enjoy all of the various Black Button whiskeys, my favorite probably being the Batch 2 Rye (either on a large ice cube or in a Manhattan). Bloody Mary’s and American Dry Dirty Martinis are both tied for a close second. Also, Cask strength Four Grain!

Do you have any advice you’d share with someone who was considering becoming a Brand Ambassador?

Bonnie: Learn the product you’ll be representing. If it’s something you’re passionate about the rest will come naturally!

John: Be prepared for regular change due to business growth, so having an ability to “roll with the punches” is essential. A good sense of humor is also important, as well as an interest and tolerance for people from all walks of life.
