Wine Enthusiast magazine has given Black Button Distilling’s Apple Pie Moonshine the highest rating of any moonshine it has rated to date, officials said.
“This gentle bottling mixes Black Button’s unaged whiskey with New York State apple cider, cinnamon and local spices. Amber and slightly cloudy, like unfiltered apple juice; it has a cider-like sweet-tart quality, with a touch of warming vanilla on the finish. It’s addictive, and would be great in fall drinks or warmed up for a mulled cider-style drink,” said Kara Newman of Wine Enthusiast magazine in a statement.
Black Button Distilling’s moonshine—which consists of Western New York fresh pressed cider sourced from Leonard Oakes Winery from Medina, unaged corn whiskey and cinnamon—was given 92 points.
“After perfecting the recipe for almost a year and trying many blends of cider, we’ve found the perfect combination of Cortland, Gala, and McIntosh apples for our Apple Pie Moonshine and we’re so proud of the score we’ve been given by Wine Enthusiast Magazine,” said Jason Barrett, Black Button Distilling’s owner and head distiller in a statement.
The firm’s Apple Pie Moonshine, priced at $23 per bottle, is available at liquor stores and bars in the Western New York, including the company’s tasting room at 85 Railroad St.
